Test Review

Refrain

Refrain- A repeated line ending each verse of a poem, particularly used in ballads.

Here is an example:
The Raven
by
Edgar Allan Poe
And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted nevermore.

Test question:
What line in Edgar Allan Poe’s poem above is an example of a refrain?

  1. Well when you look at the whole poem Edgar repeats the word "Nevermore" at the end of each and every verse of the poem. Thanks for the example!

  3. ^Thanks Paisley. You're right. You'd probably need to quote more of the poem to get at the idea of refrain.
