Refrain
Refrain- A repeated line ending each verse of a poem,
particularly used in ballads.
Here is an example:
The Raven
by
Edgar Allan Poe
And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is
sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is
dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on
the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the
floor
Shall be lifted nevermore.
Test question:
What line in Edgar Allan Poe’s poem above is an example of a
refrain?
Well when you look at the whole poem Edgar repeats the word "Nevermore" at the end of each and every verse of the poem. Thanks for the example!
ReplyDeleteI remember going over this poem in my sophmore english class in high school, great example, and question.
ReplyDelete^Thanks Paisley. You're right. You'd probably need to quote more of the poem to get at the idea of refrain.
